Recommended Daily Calorie Intake

Many people are concerned about the exact numbers of daily calorie intake trying to maintain their body weight or lose weight. It’s very individual because we all are different as well. It depends on the age, lifestyle, and gender and health condition. Here is a very rough table just to give an idea how much should a person eat per day.

For the last 40 years the amount of calories eaten daily has increased with 600 cal. We eat more fat and carbohydrates, there are a lot of new sweetened beverages offered on the market and the portions are significantly bigger.

Those who need to lose weight should consider reducing around 500 calories from their daily intake.


  • Younger children - 1000 to 2000 calories per day
  • Older children and teenagers – 1400 – 3200 calories per day

Note that in general boys need more calories than girls.

Female – 1600 – 2400 calories per day

Women who are planning pregnancy or are pregnant shouldn’t increase the amount of food. Just make sure that you got rich in Vitamin C food and also iron. They could be provided through supplements.

Male – 2000 - 3000 calories per day. Male (14 – 18 years old) could have up to 3200 calories if they are very active physically.

Considering your daily calorie requirements you need to know that:

  • These numbers are the average calorie intake.
  • Overweight people burn more calories per day.
  • Physically active people require more calories due to their faster metabolism.
  • The need of calories decreases as we age.

After all it’s not about the calories only but about the nutritional value of the food. Adding dietary supplements helps supplying our body with everything we need on a daily basis. Recommended daily calorie intake should be combined with physical activity and proper nutrition with all micronutrients in it allowing our body running efficiently.
